VDOT Worker Killed by Distracted Driver in Prince George County

Police say the employee was setting up a work zone on I-95 the morning of February 3, 2018. He was standing on the shoulder of the road when a driver struck him. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision. The driver admitted to taking her eyes off the road mere moments before the accident. Police charged the woman with reckless driving. She may be facing additional charges as the investigation into the crash continues.
The Dangers of Distracted Driving
Society’s reliance upon technology has threatened the safety of our roads. Even the best drivers will admit to occasionally reaching for their phone behind the wheel. It’s not clear if cell phone usage is what caused this driver to take her eyes off the road, but it is certainly a possibility. Many drivers are overly confident about their ability to multitask, but as evidenced by this accident, even a moment of distraction can have tragic consequences.
Pedestrians on the Highway
On the highway, we’re not accustomed to watching out for pedestrians. Generally, highways are free of walkers and cyclists. After all, they’re designed for high speed travel with little to no stopping. Still, there are often pedestrians on the highway. Between construction workers and people with car trouble, you’re bound to spot at least a few people every time you drive on the interstate. Do your part to look out for pedestrians and give them a wide berth when possible.
