Pedestrian Killed in Norfolk Military Highway Accident
One person has died after being struck by a vehicle in Norfolk. Police say the February 26, 2018 accident occurred around 9:10 PM on North Hampton Boulevard near Poplar Hall Road. Not many details about the incident have been released, but we know that the victim had been attempting to cross the road when they were struck by a truck. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds. The truck driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with police. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Increasing Temperatures, Increasing Accidents
The mild weather has led more and more pedestrians to take to the streets. While pedestrian accidents naturally increase with the temperatures because of this phenomenon, rarely have we seen such a dramatic uptick in fatal accidents this early in the year. Because it looks like spring is arriving early, we can anticipate more accidents like this over the next few weeks and months.
As a pedestrian, there are few things as important as making oneself visible to motorists, especially when you need to cross in the path of oncoming traffic. Anyone going for a walk after dark should consider wearing bright clothing made from reflective materials. While this certainly won’t eliminate all danger, it will alert motorists to your presence on the road. Streets like Military Highway are not particularly pedestrian friendly to begin with, so the lack of visibility may have only made the setting even more perilous for the victim.
