Driver Arrested in Fatal Drunk Driving Crash
A Florida man is facing charges after his involvement in a Virginia Beach car accident, police say. The June 3rd, 2018 accident occurred around 10 PM on Great Neck Road. Authorities say the driver struck a vehicle turning onto Great Neck. Both the at-fault driver and their passenger fled the scene on foot. Tragically, the woman at the wheel of the other car involved in the collision died of her injuries.
Police eventually apprehended the men, providing medical treatment for their minor injuries are charging the driver with driving while intoxicated, involuntary manslaughter, hit-and-run and refusing a blood alcohol test.
Making a Bad Situation Worse
There’s no doubt that the at-fault driver made bad choices on this fateful night. The decision to drive drunk is always a bad one. His choice to do so led to the fatal accident. But his decision to flee the scene of the incident made a bad situation much worse. He and his passenger likely faced far more serious consequences because of their decision to flee. While the driver certainly would have faced DUI charges had he remained on scene, the fact that he fled the scene and tried to escape responsibility for his actions reflects poorly on him.
The Duty to Provide Help
Should you find yourself in an accident, it’s your duty to offer assistance and to call authorities for help. Even if you’re not trained to provide medical attention, the simple act of calling for help can fulfill the duty of care all drivers are required to provide when involved in an accident. Of course, it should go without saying that fleeing the scene of an accident is always a bad idea, and can lead to far more trouble than one might otherwise face.
